Mace Essential Oil is extracted from the aril (lacy husk) of the nutmeg fruit. Around the outside of the nutmeg seed is a bright red webbing called the aril. From this aril, Mace Oil is extracted, a less common version of nutmeg oil with a stronger, spicier aroma than nutmeg oil. Due to the aril being much smaller than the nutmeg seed, Mace Oil is considerably more expensive than Nutmeg Seed Oil, but more aromatic.
Aroma profile: Warm, sweet, and spicy with woody, citrusy, and nutmeg-like nuances. Imagine the scent of freshly grated nutmeg amplified and enriched with hints of orange peel and clove.
Uses:
• Culinary: A key ingredient in pumpkin spice blends, mace oil adds warmth and complexity to baked goods, savory dishes, and beverages like mulled cider. It's also used in certain sausage and meat preparations.
• Flavoring: Mace oil can be used to infuse spirits, liqueurs, and syrups with its unique flavor profile. A few drops can elevate cocktails, desserts, and even savory sauces.
• Perfumery: Mace oil adds a warm and spicy base note to oriental and spicy fragrances. Its complex aroma blends well with citrus, wood, and resin notes.
• Aromatherapy: Diffused mace oil can create a warming and comforting atmosphere, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
• Natural insect repellent: Mace oil's spicy aroma reportedly deters certain insects, though its effectiveness may vary. It's important to test it in a small area before applying it broadly.
Safety notes:
• Mace Essential Oil is generally considered safe for culinary and aromatic use when diluted properly. Mace oil is more potent than nutmeg and should be used sparingly. A few drops in a home application, or a minimal percentage in an industrial formulation, are typically enough to achieve the desired flavor or aroma.
