Valerian essential oil is used for mental fatigue, lack of focus, over exertion, anxiety, stress, headaches, epilepsy, hysteria, menstrual states of agitation, and menopause. Valerian essential oil has shown to induce sleep in humans at a faster rate than subjects not exposed to the oil.

Improvements in sleep quality was shown in a placebo-controlled study involving 121 patients. Patients were given Valerian root or a placebo 1 hour before bedtime for 28 consecutive nights. Patients were given 2 sleep questionnaires; one that measured the mood scale and another global clinical impression scale. 66% of the Valerian treatment group rated the valerians therapeutic effect as either good or very good at the end of the 28-day trial. This compared to only a 29% equally positive rating by the placebo participants. (Vorbach, 1996).
