Co2 Extraction is comparable to steam distillation as after the extraction process there are no traces of residual solvents. Instead of using benzy benzoate or hexane solvents (as absolutes do) to extract the oil, Co2 extracts oil by converting into a "supercritical," state --- neither a gas or liquid, acting as a natural form of "solvent" to extract the oil from the plant. The special quality of Co2 is after the extraction is complete the Co2 used to extract the oil turns back into a gaseous state and completely dissolves with no trace left behind.
